ne of the most characteristic places in Veliko Tarnovo is district „Varusha.” It consists of many small, thin streets, which sometimes are only stairs. They form a peculiar labyrinth saturated with sensory inducements such as specific sounds from hidden courtyards, smells and feeling of
presence in an isolated fantasy world.
presence in an isolated fantasy world.
The aim of the work „То the other end” is to attract visitors of the city and the citizens themselves to indulge in this particular location. I want them to feel for a while like children and to follow all the sensations that appear during a visit.
As Ariadne carried Theseus through the labyrinth with the thread, I want to guide people through the labyrinth of streets of „Varusha”, to situate them in a particular atmosphere of these spaces.
They will be invited to follow a thread, and to find the other end. The thread, as a line on the map, will indicate the route, and will take the role of the guide. In this way, visitors will be able to take selected trail without worrying that they will get lost.
Following the line/thread is just an excuse to explore the environment using tactility. Principle of this work is to redirect attention of participants from the visual aspect of the perception to the other inducements characteristic to given location, which also affect other senses.
District „Varusha” was initial inspiration to explore space around us with all senses. Principle of Ariadne’s thread can be used in other various places. When we change area and time of the visit, dominant impulses that influence our perception are also changing. Therefore, each time selected route will cause an individual for each person feel.
