Faculty of Fine Arts – DEPARTMENT OF “SCULPTURE”
The “Skupptura” department is a fundamental unit of the Faculty of Fine Arts. Currently, the “Sculpture” Department has one of, perhaps, the best bases for development and training in the field of sculpture – studios, lecture halls, auxiliary workshops. Specially designed and built for the needs of the “Sculpture” department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, the sculpture building is a building with specialized studios, lecture halls and auxiliary spaces, conceived and built for the needs of a modern and perspective education in sculpture. The teaching staff, for the most part qualified persons, consists of some of the brightest and most prominent representatives of Bulgarian sculpture from different generations.
The sculpture building has 6 large studios, each with an area of 90 sq.m., 2 painting studios with an area of 80 sq.m., 6 smaller studios with a total area of over 180 sq.m., plastering studios, stonework and woodwork, each with an area of 65 sq.m. In addition, the students have a metalworking workshop with an area of 60 square meters, a computer room with permanent Internet access, additional spaces for storing the museum collection and for realizing spatially unconventional works. Most studios have overhead lighting and a panoramic view of Veliko Tarnovo. They are equipped with the most necessary tools for working with the main sculptural materials. Next to the building, there is a dedicated space for outdoor work on large-format stone sculptures and other materials. In the corridors and foyers of the sculpture building, part of the museum collection of the “Sculpture” department is exhibited. The building has local steam heating and an air conditioning system.
At the moment, the existing studios, workshops, halls and other spaces fully provide the educational process in the main disciplines: sculpture, composition, technologies in sculpture and performance in material, and drawing of the taught specialties – “Fine Arts/Sculpture/” and “Pedagogy of Education in fine art/sculpture/” in three educational degrees – bachelor, master and doctor. In addition, the learning process is provided here in the freely selectable disciplines of modeling and technologies in sculpture and performance in material /for other specialties of FII/. Foreign students are also trained here on various European educational programs.
A great convenience for the students of the “Sculpture” department is the location of the sculpture building. It is part of the central university complex. It is located in close proximity to the university library, the rectory and the hall, the indoor sports complex, the student hall and the dormitories. In the rectory building there is a student-teacher coffee club, restaurants, buffets, bookstores and internet rooms. The indoor sports complex has a swimming pool, playgrounds and a climbing wall.
The new sculpture studios, the historical and cultural traditions, and the natural uniqueness of Veliko Tarnovo turn the University of Veliko Tarnovo and the “Sculpture” department into a center for new ideas in the field of sculpture education, for academic and creative communication between prominent sculptors from the country and abroad, teachers in higher education institutions in the arts and their students.
